Details
This 19th-century micromosaic depicts the historic Porta Castello, once part of the Leonine Walls of Rome. Each piece of glass is meticulously hand-set to create a richly detailed scene that celebrates the city's grand architectural heritage. The composition is framed by a narrow gold bezel accented with luminous cabochon aquamarines and fine gold detailing, and finished with a graceful hinged bale that clips easily onto a necklace. Micromosaics such as this one were collected as prized mementos of European travel. This one has been reimagined by Elizabeth Locke as a jewel to be worn and cherished, giving new life to this miniature work of art.
